Our Lesson Horses
Rocky
My name is Rocky! I came to North Crest several years ago after being a family’s trail horse, so I had to learn how to be a lesson horse. I am very relaxed and easy to be around. I’m not always fond of being groomed, but my staff always makes sure to curry the spots I really do like being scratched. I am very patient and kind, and I try very hard to do a good job for my rider. The instructors wish they had more horses just like me because I can work with brand new riders on or off the lunge line and I can also come “round” and go “on the bit” like a fancy dressage horse. I’ve learned so much since coming to North Crest and now I can teach all types of riders! I like the routine here and I have made so many horse and people friends!
Misty
I came from Holly Hill Farm where I was one of the favorite horses there. I came with a huge following and fan club of riders. My job is to teach all of the beginners how to walk, trot, post, and, when they are confident enough, how to navigate around the arena on their own. I am very patient and kind. I am not as big as some of my fellow lesson horses, so I am perfect for young children. The instructors keep telling everyone “I am very special” and “their favorite to teach on” so that makes me smile! I also have a very fun, fast canter that many of the more advanced people enjoy riding. I guess that does make me “very, very special”!
Pepper
My name is Pepper! I came all the way from Georgia to be a lesson horse here at North Crest. I was living at a jumper barn and I’m really happy that Julie bought me because I don’t like to jump!. Good thing that my strengths lie in other areas, like being smart, easy-going, willing, and handsome! My riders say that I am very comfortable to ride, too. I didn’t know how to be a lesson horse when I first arrived, but I listened and tried hard to please my riders and trainers. I like my home at North Crest – the meals, snacks, lessons with my students, snacks, treats, attention, a stall-with-a-view, snacks, love, and care. The other lesson horses told me that Julie had been looking for the “right horse” for over six months – I guess that makes me lucky AND special. Hey, did you know they feed snacks here?!?
Joey
My name is Joey, AKA Joe-Joe or Joseph! I’ve been at North Crest for less than a year, but I’ve already acquired a large fan club because of my charm and good looks. Riders also complement my work ethic – I love to work! Being so eager to please makes me sensitive to cues, so I’m an advanced lesson horse. A fun fact is that I’m the only horse of my breed here at North Crest. My breed is called a “Paint Horse” and that’s the reason for my super cute face and the extra tall socks on my legs. Food in general and treats in particular are my obsession!
Lakota
My name is Lakota! I’m the newest lesson horse here are North Crest. Having only been here a month, I’m still settling in and getting used to being in a lesson program. I was trained as a western horse, so now I’m learning the ropes of English riding. It’s different! The people here like to comment on how much I look like Misty. They call me her twin! I am missing a couple of white spots, though, so we are not completely identical. Surprisingly, I’m unlike the other horses in that I’m picky about what treats I accept. I prefer carrots or apples over bananas. However, I do enjoy the rest of the food served here – especially the grain! It’s yummy!

We think our lesson horses are worth their weight in gold! Just like humans, every horse has their own unique personality. There aren’t two horses that are identical anywhere in the world. Our lesson horses have helped many students with their riding education – whether they are just beginning to ride or want to hone existing skills. We take pride in all our lesson horses and continue to appreciate their patience, kindness, and outstanding work ethics.
